2. Individually, find 5 real job openings in your field using Indeed or Handshake.

3. Search for your ideal job in a city, region, or state you might want to live in.

4. Carefully read the 5 real job openings you find and summarize what employers want you to know in these categories:

  1. What are the main tasks they want you to perform?
  2. What software do you need to know?
  3. What will you be creating?
  4. Who will you work closely with to perform your job?
  5. What soft skills do you need to know?
  6. What level of education do they want you to have?
  7. Any other skills requested?

5. Write a one-page summary and upload it in Blackboard for points

6. Be prepared to share your findings in class.

This research will create a snapshot of what an employer wants you to know when you apply for a job in your field. It will also give you a roadmap of what you need to learn to be hired in your chosen field.

Think of this research often as you

  • Build your skills and knowledge over the next few years
  • Create your resume, cover letter, and portfolio
  • Prepare to answer interview questions

Craft your job search marketing materials with these employer needs in mind. During a job interview, you must tell, show, and convince potential employers that you can do most of what they ask for in their job postings. You have to believe that you can do them, too.
