Marketing Material Analysis

It’s a good practice to analyze real marketing material so you can better understand what other designers did to communicate a message to their audience. What typefaces did they pair together? What color scheme did they choose? How did they photograph their products? Did they show products and people? What design elements did they repeat throughout the design?

Challenge yourself next time you go grocery shopping to analyze one packaged product with your keen designer’s eye.

Think about these questions:

  • Message
What is being communicated? 1–3 words
  • Audience
Who is the message intended for?
  • Style
    How is the design themed?
  • Grid
    Draw the grid used
  • Chunking
Define how chunking is used to deliver the content in small chunks
  • Typefaces
How many different typefaces are used?
  • Color
Name and define the color scheme
  • Art and Photo Direction
Art or photos? What’s unique? How do they reinforce the message?
  • Principles
How are unity, emphasis, balance, and rhythm (leading the viewer’s eye) used?
  • What would you change to make it better?
